Over 10,000 kilometres travelled, more than 30 interviews, hours and hours of footage, texts and many stories collected. The project ‘From Prisons to Death’, realised by Aned with funding from the German Embassy in Italy, aims to shed light on an aspect that has remained unknown to most: the importance of fascist prisons for the repression and deportation of thousands of people to Nazi camps, where many found death.
A project that highlights the weight that Italian fascism, the ‘father’ of Nazism and many other European far-right political parties, had in the deportation and murder of thousands of innocent people.
And he highlights this through a journey that will take the ‘reader-spectator’ on a journey where he will first learn why and who could end up in prison during the regime, the importance of prisons in deportation, the stories of those who did not make it and those who survived through a journey backwards made with family members, those who were deported from Italy and why, despite the thousands of victims, fascism is still seen as ‘a good thing’ today.
The videos and documentaries in the project are made by director Victor Musetti while the historical texts were written by Costantino Di Sante. Sound engineer Giuseppe Rotondi edited and homogenised both the audio of the videos and the ‘podcast interviews’.
The project was conceived and coordinated – with the help of Lucia Tubaro – by journalist Francesco Bertolucci, who also conducted the interviews and provided the voice.
The realisation of the site is by Andrea Venturi, the graphic design by Stephen Sbrana while the translations from Italian into German are by the Germanist Claudio Cassetti.
